Mossy

Mossy fragrances belong to the Chypre family tradition, drawing on oakmoss and related materials to create a green, damp, forest-floor quality that is simultaneously earthy and refined. Oakmoss has a complex smell that reads as woody, marine, earthy, and slightly animalic all at once, making it one of perfumery's most irreplaceable ingredients.

The mossy accord was central to French Chypre perfumery from the early 20th century through the 1980s, when IFRA restrictions on oakmoss forced a reformulation crisis that changed the fragrance industry permanently. Modern mossy fragrances use materials like Evernyl and various synthetic moss molecules to approximate what oakmoss provided, with varying degrees of success.

Mossy accords pair beautifully with earthy, woody, green, and floral notes. If the damp, forested quality of mossy fragrances appeals to you, explore earthy, patchouli, green, and woody accord families.
