Iris

Iris is one of the most expensive and coveted materials in all of perfumery, derived from the rhizomes of Iris pallida and Iris germanica plants after years of drying. The resulting orris butter smells remarkably complex: simultaneously powdery, woody, violet-like, slightly earthy, and carriagelike with a cold, almost metallic quality that is entirely unique. A kilogram of orris butter can cost thousands of dollars.

In fragrance, iris translates as powdery elegance with depth, often described as smelling like a freshly pressed white shirt or a morning room in a fine old house. It is the defining note of several of the world's most respected perfumes, from Chanel No. 19 to Prada Infusion d'Iris. Modern perfumers also use synthetic isones and irones to approximate its character at lower cost.

Iris pairs beautifully with violet, rose, leather, woody, and powdery notes. Fans of iris fragrances often love powdery, violet, floral, and leather accord families.
