Anis

The anis (or anise) accord is one of the most distinctive and immediately recognizable in all of fragrance, delivering that sharp, sweet, licorice-like quality that either captivates or divides a room. The note comes primarily from anethole, found naturally in anise seed, star anise, fennel, and tarragon. In perfumery it reads as simultaneously sweet, herbal, and slightly medicinal.

Anise has a long history in fragrance, appearing in classic fougeres and chypres where it adds an aromatic, slightly strange dimension that keeps a composition from being too safe or predictable. In modern niche perfumery it has enjoyed a revival, paired with leather, tobacco, and dark woods to create genuinely unusual compositions that feel bold and unconventional.

Anis pairs well with herbal, spicy, tobacco, and aromatic accords. If you enjoy the character of anise, the herbal, green, and aromatic accord families offer related sharpness and botanical depth.
